The Truth

Democrat State Senator Sandy Senn has been spreading lies about Rep. Matt Leber, his family, and his military service in a desperate attempt to hold on to her senate seat. She knows a Republican will win, but instead of focusing on the issues that matter to District 41 voters, she has resorted to falsehoods and deception to disparage Rep. Leber and his family, and to avoid discussing the issues. Visit whoissandysenn.com to learn more about Sandy's leftist record.

SANDY'S LIE #1: Sandy Senn publicly accused Matt of making up his college degree.

THE TRUTH: After Matt was released from the Army, he went on to get his college degree from Mitchell Community College.

SANDY'S LIE #2: Sandy Senn has wrongfully accused Matt of abusing his ex-wife.

THE TRUTH: Following their divorce, Matt's ex-wife regrettably and foolishly made false allegations that Matt hit her in Surry, North Carolina. Upon producing proof that he was in South Carolina at the time of the alleged incident, the court immediately dismissed the charges against Matt and rebuked his ex-wife, suspending her visitation rights and affirming Matt's full custody of his daughter, Savanah. Matt's ex-wife later apologized for her false accusations, and the Leber family put the incident behind them. Since then, Matt and Michele have provided Savanah with a loving and stable home. Matt has a CWP issued by SLED pursuant to a thorough background check and all records relating to this incident have been expunged.

Sadly, Sandy Senn has sought to exploit this painful moment and leverage the unfortunate bias against fathers in the family court system to attack the Leber family and involve Matt's children in her quest to cling to political office. Matt's daughter, Savanah, has fully repudiated Senn's lies in an open letter in which she discusses the painful impact of Senn exploiting her personal life for political gain. Read her letter HERE.

SANDY'S LIE #3: In a particularly unbecoming series of allegations, Sandy Senn repeatedly slandered Rep. Matt Leber's years of service in our Nation's armed forces.

THE TRUTH: Representative Doug Gilliam, the Chairman of the SC House Military Caucus and a retired Command Sergeant Major, sets the record straight in his open letter regarding Matt's service. Read Rep. Gilliam's letter HERE.

Coming from a family with a strong record of service, Matt signed up to serve as a paratrooper as soon as he turned 18, and, in 1996, he volunteered for combat duty in Bosnia with the 1st Armored Division. Matt's grandfather was a paratrooper, his brother is a paratrooper, and Matt's wife, Michele, served 30 years in the Army National Guard, both enlisted and as an officer.

Matt is active in veteran organizations and has been outspoken in his support for South Carolina's military families, earning him a reputation both in Columbia and in the Lowcountry as an advocate for veterans' issues, which is why members of the community were outraged to see Sandy Senn stoop to attack Matt's years of impeccable and well-documented service.

SANDY'S LIE #4: Sandy Senn has dug up expunged records of a landlord-tenant dispute in which Matt was accused of stalking a recalcitrant tenant while serving court documents.

THE TRUTH: In 2016, Matt and Michele rented their family home to a tenant who, unbeknownst to them, was a repeat abuser of landlord-tenant laws and a habitual drug user. Operating under a series of false aliases and different social security numbers, she was able to evade detection on background checks and rent out homes before refusing to pay her rent to her unsuspecting landlords, effectively occupying property as a squatter and requiring landowners to resort to the court system to regain access to their own property.

While their eviction request made its way through the Georgia court system, Matt and Michele stood by powerless while their beloved family home became a drug hangout and was defaced with graffiti. Their tenant not only continued to live rent-free in their fully furnished home, but she also began breeding pit bulls in the residence, causing extensive property damage and destroying irreplicable family heirlooms.

After months of legal proceedings, the Lebers were finally able to secure an eviction and take back possession of their home. However, they were left with over 70,000 dollars in property damages, court costs, legal fees, and lost rent. To recoup their financial loss, they filed suit in Georgia court, but the tenant had disappeared, leaving no forwarding address, in an attempt to evade service of process.

After finally tracking her down, Matt attempted to serve her with the court documents, but she called the police. The responding officers informed her that Matt was entitled to serve her with court documents, but she demanded to see a supervisor. When the supervisor arrived, she stated, "I know you're just serving her court documents, but you did follow her home from the gas station, and we have this new law in Georgia. I don't know if this falls under it, so I'm just going to arrest you and let the judge decide." (The new law in question was in fact promulgated to address domestic disputes rather than landlord-tenant issues or service of process).

When Matt showed up to court, the clerk informed him that the charge had been summarily dismissed and apologized for the inconvenience. The tenant was eventually arrested, charged, and convicted of 10 misdemeanors for the criminal destruction of the Lebers' home, and she remains on probation to this day. Additionally, the court ordered her to pay the Lebers 56,000 dollars in damages.

Having experienced firsthand the ineffectiveness of the housing court system, Matt entered public office resolved to improve the quality, speed, and access of the state court systems so that all citizens can benefit from the fair administration of justice guaranteed to them by our Constitution. Rather than rely on Sandy Senn's frivolous accusations, we'd think the documents speak for themselves. Read them, HERE.
